The EuroMillions Rules are Changing

Bigger jackpots more often, a new jackpot cap, and more special promotional draws!

We never thought the EuroMillions could get more exciting, but as from Saturday 1st February 2020, excitement will hit the roof! The EuroMillions rules will be changing, so here’s a brief overview of what’s going to happen:

  1. 1. We’re expecting bigger jackpots, more often

The EuroMillions is expected to grow even faster than it does at the moment because of a new prize structure. This new structure will allow a bigger percentage of sales to be put into the jackpot prize tier, and if the game grows faster, the EuroMillions jackpot grows quicker. To make this possible, the percentage of sales assigned to prize tiers below the jackpot has been reduced.

  1. 2. A new capping for the jackpot

The current EuroMillions jackpot is capped at €190 million. However, as from the 1st February, the jackpot cap will increase by €10 million, making it possible for the jackpot to reach a maximum of €200 million. If the EuroMillions jackpot prize fund exceeds €200 million, the additional money will be used to boost the prize at the next highest tier where there is at least one winner.

  1. 3. An increase in special promotional draws

A percentage of the prize fund is added to the EuroMillions Reserve Fund with every EuroMillions draw. This fund is used to increase jackpots, to increase prizes, or for any other promotions. The new prize structure will allow more money to be allocated to the reserve fund, increasing the possibility of special promotional draws to be offered from an average of 2 per year to an average of three per year. There may also be an increase in the value of the guaranteed jackpots in these promotional draws.

  1. Why is all of this happening?

These changes to the rules of the EuroMillions lottery are taking place to keep the lottery growing and to make it more exciting. It will also allow for more money to be raised for Good Causes. The price of the ticket, the choice of numbers, the starting (or ‘base’) jackpots, the number of prize tiers, and the odds of winning will remain the same. To celebrate these changes to the EuroMillions lottery, a super jackpot draw will take place on Friday 7th February with a guaranteed jackpot of €130 million!
